Oban

Oban is the one and only town of Stewart Island and offers travellers a beautiful place to base themselves before heading out to experience the best Stewart Island and Rakiura has to offer, as well as the coast, forests, and trails.

Just south of the South Island, you’ll reach Oban after catching the daily ferry from Bluff. You’ll notice the dense surrounding forest of the national park, the golden sandy beaches, and the hilly terrain offering some stunning views of the Foveaux Strait. Oban has a small supermarket, a local pub, a couple of cafes, visitor centres, and our cosy Stewart Island Lodge, so you’ll be well taken care of in this small town. It’s also where you’ll find all our experience departures; whether you’re catching the ferry, heading on a Village and Bays Tour, going on a Wild Kiwi Encounter, or renting a car, this hub is a must to spend some time in!
